Claim:
A viral video on Instagram claims to show Cockroach Janata Party founder @abhijeet_dipke being allegedly slapped during the party’s October 2, 2026 protest at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park. The caption of this post suggests a narrative about protests, accountability and political disruption.
Fact:
The claim is misleading. In its investigation, the DFRAC team found this claim to be misleading. After searching for the keywords, we found no credible reports of Dipke being assaulted during the recent Shivaji Park protest in Mumbai. Reverse image search of keyframes from the viral video traced the footage to an Instagram post dated June 15, 2026, which identified the incident as a protest in Jaipur, Rajasthan.
The same footage was also reported by NDTV on June 15, 2026. The report showed Dipke being carried on his supporters’ shoulders at the Jaipur protest when a man pulled him by his clothing and, along with another person, repeatedly slapped and hit him. NDTV reported that police detained people in connection with the assault.
India Today also published the same incident on June 15, reporting that Dipke was allegedly slapped while arriving at the protest at Shaheed Smarak in Jaipur. Police said two youths were detained in connection with the incident.
Following the assault, Dipke called for the protests to remain peaceful and said the attack would not deter him from continuing his campaign.
DFRAC also contacted Jaipur-based independent journalist Wahid Yazdani regarding the video in question. He termed this video as being from June 15th 2026, and not from any recent incident.
Conclusion:
Therefore, the viral footage is from the June 2026 Jaipur incident and has been falsely presented as showing a fresh assault during the October 2 Mumbai protest.
