On social media, news from Kashmir has gone viral. While sharing the news, users wrote “Breaking news: Three Indian Army soldiers have been killed, and two others injured during an ongoing clash with Kashmiri freedom fighters in the Gujar Pati #Zaloora area of Sopore.

Fact Check
During the investigation, DFRAC found the claim to be false. We found a tweet from the official X handle of ‘Chinar Corps- Indian Army’ dated January 19, 2025, with the caption: “On 19 Jan 25, based on specific intelligence regarding the presence of terrorists, a Joint Cordon & Search Operation was launched by #IndianArmy & @JmuKmrPolice at Gujjarpatti, Sopore, Baramulla. Suspicious activity was observed by vigilant troops and, upon being challenged, terrorists opened indiscriminate fire. Own troops effectively retaliated. The operation is ongoing.”
Furthermore, we found several media reports regarding the claim. According to a report by ‘Greater Kashmir’ published on January 19, 2025, “A fierce gunfight broke out between militants and security forces in Gujjarpati, Zaloora area of north Kashmir’s Sopore on Sunday. Reports reaching GNS stated that a joint team of Police, Army, and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation in Zaloora after receiving specific inputs about the presence of militants in the area.”

Moreover, we also found a report from ‘India Today’ published on January 20, 2025, which states: “The Sopore encounter between security forces and terrorists is ongoing in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, with reports suggesting that one or two terrorists are suspected to be hiding in the area. The encounter began last night when security forces raided a hideout, after which militants opened fire, leading to the operation in the entire area.”

Conclusion
It is evident from DFRAC’s fact check that the claim about three Indian Army soldiers being killed and two others injured during a clash in the Gujar Pati area of Sopore is false. The operation is still ongoing, and the reported gunfight involves security forces and suspected militants. However, no confirmation of casualties among Indian Army personnel has been provided at this time.
