With only a few months left before the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, political exchanges between parties have intensified. Earlier, Samajwadi Party (SP) Uttar Pradesh president Shyam Lal Pal had made a statement about Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) national president Jayant Chaudhary, following which Jayant Chaudhary also targeted the SP. Amid this, a statement purportedly made by Jayant Chaudhary is going viral on social media, in which he is allegedly seen commenting on the Jat community.
A purported Navbharat Times (NBT) postcard features a statement attributed to Jayant Chaudhary that reads, “Have I taken the responsibility of the Jat community that 700 Jat farmers died?” Sharing this infographic, a user named V N Yadav wrote, “Chaudhary Jayant Singh has now become completely immersed in the comforts of power. It seems he has accepted that elections can only be won through EVMs, not through the people.”
Similarly, a user named Shobhnath Rao shared the viral NBT postcard and wrote, “Can Jayant Chaudhary, grandson of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh, make such a statement? If he did, then surely he could make such a statement under pressure from the RSS.”
Fact check:
The DFRAC team found that the viral claim is misleading and that Jayant Chaudhary did not make the statement attributed to him. Our investigation also found that NBT did not publish any such postcard featuring this statement. Meanwhile, RLD spokesperson Anil Dubey, while speaking to DFRAC, termed the viral claim misleading.
The DFRAC team first examined the viral postcard closely. Since it carries the Navbharat Times (NBT) logo, we checked NBT’s social media handles. We found that NBT has recently published several postcards featuring statements by Jayant Chaudhary, but the viral postcard was not among them.We found that the original postcard carries a different statement by Jayant Chaudhary, which reads: “This is not the time to remain silent. Some things are beyond the limits of tolerance. Chaudhary Charan Singh’s community will give its answer in the elections. Jayant Chaudhary will not have to answer for this alone.”
For further investigation, we conducted a Google search using relevant keywords related to the viral statement attributed to Jayant Chaudhary. We did not find any recent statement by Jayant Chaudhary mentioning the deaths of 700 Jat farmers.However, we found media coverage of a statement made by Jayant Chaudhary during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, in which he had commented on the notion of taking responsibility for the Jat community. A News18 Hindi report was published with the headline, “Jayant Chaudhary’s controversial statement: I speak for farmers, I have not taken responsibility for Jats.”The report stated that RLD vice-president Jayant Chaudhary, while addressing a public meeting in Shamli, said, “I speak for farmers; I have not taken responsibility for Jats.” He further said that Jayant Chaudhary speaks only about farmers and that people from smaller sections of society were associated with the farmers’ movement. It is worth noting that the SP, BSP and RLD were in an alliance during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
For further information, the DFRAC team contacted RLD spokesperson Anil Dubey. He denied the viral claim and stated that Jayant Chaudhary had not made any such statement and that the viral claim was misleading.
Conclusion:
The DFRAC fact-check makes it clear that the claim circulating on social media is misleading. Jayant Chaudhary did not make the viral statement about “700 Jat farmers dying.” Our investigation also found that NBT did not publish the viral postcard featuring this statement. The original NBT postcard was edited and manipulated, with a false statement attributed to Jayant Chaudhary.
