A video is becoming fiercely viral on social media showing people of the Muslim Community taking out a procession on the streets of Delhi while shouting slogans. Users on social media are sharing this video by giving it a communal angle.
A user named Sujeet Swami posted this video and wrote: “Even when Trump came, there was a similar conspiracy to defame the country. Now even at the time of #G20Bharat the people of Muslim religion have come on the road… Whereas in #दिल्ली section 144 is applicable.” (English Translation).
Furthermore, some users are sharing this video and making similar claims.
The DFRAC team conducted an investigation in the context of the above viral video. During the investigation, we found a tweet by the Delhi Police. In this tweet, Delhi Police stated: “Some social media handles are wrongly projecting videos of Chehlum procession, as communal protest before G-20 Summit. The Chehlum procession is a traditional one and is carried out with due permission from the law-enforcing agencies. Please do not spread rumors”.
Moreover, According to a report by ETV Bharat, “Chehallum procession was taken out in the capital on Wednesday. This procession is taken out on the 40th day of Muharram. The procession passed through Chitli Kabar, Matia Mahal, Jama Masjid, Hauz Qazi, Ajmeri Gate, Paharganj Bridge, Chelmsford Road and New Delhi Railway Station in North Delhi to reach Dargah Shah-e-Mardan and later Karbala. Security arrangements were made by the traffic police and police regarding the procession and vehicles were diverted from their designated route.
It is clear from DFRAC’s Fact-Check that the claim regarding the above viral video is misleading. According to Delhi police, Chehlum is a traditional mourning procession. It is taken out with the proper permission of law enforcement agencies.
