A video has gone viral in India with a claim that some Hindutvabadi elements have mob-lynched a Christian youth. A young man can be seen being beaten by some people in the video.

A Twitter user with a name “South Asian Human Rights Watch” wrote along with the video: “Rising trend of mob lynching in India captured on camera as a Hindu mob attacked a Christian. Concerns over communal violence and religious intolerance escalates, the international community must take notice of this situation.”

Fact Check

To know the truth behind the viral video, the DFRAC team, as part of its investigation, converted the video into many frames and then conducted a reverse search. This search led to finding of a news report of TV 9 news channel. This news report dated 23 December 2022. According to this report, a mob had tried to lynch a Dalit youth in Badodara district, Gujarat. The report said that the Dalit youth was sitting with a woman and after that people beat him. The police, according to report, had also taken five people into custody after this incident.

Connected with this incident, the DFRAC team found a tweet of Congress MLA and renowned social activist Jignesh Mevani who had slammed Gujarat government for attack on the Dalit youth.

Besides, many other media outlets also covered the same Dalit-beating incident.

Conclusion

It is clear from DFRAC findings that the viral video has nothing to do with attack on a Christian youth and that it belongs to a 2022 Gujarat Dalit-beating incident which was widely reported by media. So, the claim of certain social media users is fake.
