Claim

A viral video shows the Police Commissioner and other officers distributing Iftar to children. The caption mentioned Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party regime in Uttar Pradesh. This Iftar Party was organized in a Police Station.

A viral Facebook post falsely claims that an Iftar event hosted by the Solapur Police Commissioner in Maharashtra in 2022 took place in Uttar Pradesh. The post includes a video showing police officers in uniform serving food to seated guests at a gathering, with a caption criticizing the Uttar Pradesh government. The misleading claim attempts to misrepresent the event as occurring under the previous UP administration, despite evidence confirming its location in Maharashtra. This misinformation highlights the spread of misleading narratives on social media.

Fact Check

To verify the claim made in the post, DFRAC conducted a reverse image search using a keyframe from the video. This led to several similar recent posts.  

Further verification brought up older news reports from 2022. Reports published on 29 April 2022 by Muslim Mirror and on 1 May 2022 by Awaz the Voice stated that the Solapur Police Commissioner, Harish Baijal, had organized an Iftar for Urdu school students. The event was attended by over 100 people, including primary school students and teachers from a Social Urdu Primary School.

A social media post also highlighted this gathering. Additionally, a video from the Mumbai Times YouTube channel, dated 1 May 2022, shows visuals from the Iftar hosted by the Solapur Police Commissioner in Maharashtra.
