Pakistan-based handles took to social media platform X(formerly Twitter) and claimed that following the Guwahati High Court’s decision, India had deported 25,000 Bangladeshis from Assam, a grave violation of global refugee laws.
An X handle named Kashmir English posted an image showing some people standing in a cue and wrote: “Following the Guwahati High Court’s decision, India has deported 25,000 Bangladeshis from Assam, a grave violation of global refugee laws”.
Furthermore, another X handle shared this image and made a similar claim.
Fact-Check
In DFRAC’s probe, the claim made by Pakistan-based handles was found to be misleading.
A Google keyword search related to the above-shared claim led us to the latest reports published by Times Of India , MSN, and Prag News
Further, the reports cited that the majority of judges in the SC bench had held that immigrants in this group (1966 to 1971), who had n’t registered within the prescribed timeframe, would lose eligibility for citizenship. However, Justice JB Pardiwala dissented, arguing that those immigrants should be allowed to register even after the deadline.
Conclusion
DFRAC’s fact-check clearly shows that Pak-handles’ claim is misleading since 25,000 individuals have not been deported yet. Moreover, one of the judges has argued that immigrants should be allowed to register with the Foreigners Regional Registration Officer (FRRO) even after the deadline.
