Misleading claim associated with video of a brawl between a Congress worker and police personnel

Fact Check en Misleading

A video circulating online claims to show an alleged male Congress supporter assaulting a female Delhi Police officer during demonstrations demanding the Chief Election Commissioner’s resignation.

The caption of a post mentions: “A video from a political confrontation in Delhi has sparked questions and debate.
A male Congress worker is alleged to have attacked a female Delhi Police officer, while Congress shared the footage on its official handle, raising allegations of police brutality against female workers.
The incident has triggered discussions about accountability, the treatment of women, and the importance of examining the complete context before drawing conclusions. Any allegation of assault should be investigated fairly, and the facts should be established through credible evidence.
The key question remains: What exactly happened, and what does the complete footage reveal?”

Fact:

The DFRAC team found this claim to be misleading. A reverse image search led us to an Instagram post by Ritu Barala, National Secretary of NSUI, sharing the same incident from another perspective. Barala said she and other student protesters faced police violence while demonstrating against alleged “vote theft” near Gate No. 7 of Rajiv Chowk Metro Station. She described the incident as an attack on their democratic rights and vowed to continue raising the issue.

Barala’s public profile identifies her as a former president of Maharani College, a candidate in the 2022 Rajasthan University Students’ Union presidential election, a member of the Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee, and the NSUI’s National Secretary responsible for western Uttar Pradesh.

Media reports published on October 14, 2026, provided further details. Bhaskar English reported that the clash took place inside a bus after police detained demonstrators at Rajiv Chowk. Its account described Barala and a female Delhi Police officer grappling, pulling each other’s hair and exchanging blows before other personnel stepped in. Navbharat Times also covered the incident, reporting Barala’s allegation that the officer had initiated the fight and that she subsequently underwent a medical examination.

The confrontation triggered accusations from Congress and NSUI leaders, who alleged that police had mistreated protesters, particularly women. During a press conference on October 14, Rahul Gandhi expressed support for Barala, calling her “Yeh sherni hai” (“She is a lioness”) and praising her for standing her ground.

Conclusion:

The video shows a physical confrontation between NSUI leader Ritu Barala and a female Delhi Police officer, not an attack by a male Congress worker.
