Fact Check: Old video from Bangladesh goes viral with misleading claim of infiltrators fleeing in West Bengal

Fact Check en Featured Misleading

A video has been shared on social media showing a large number of Muslims carrying belongings. Users are claiming that after the formation of a BJP government in West Bengal, Rohingyas and Bangladeshi infiltrators are fleeing the state.

A user named Dilip Kumar Singh, known for frequently spreading fake news and misleading information on social media, shared the video with the caption: “Breaking News: Heavy crowds at West Bengal railway stations… Seeing the election results, infiltrators have started fleeing Bengal for Bangladesh on their own… Hindus beware… these monsters could come to your city too… inform the nearest police as soon as you see these demons!!”(English Translation)

Meanwhile, another user, Chanda Meena, wrote: “As soon as the BJP wins in Bengal, illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators and Rohingya Muslims will be seen fleeing back to Bangladesh to save their lives.”(English Translation)

Fact check:

The DFRAC team found that the viral video is not from a railway station in West Bengal. It is an old video from the Charmonai Mahfil in the Barishal district of Bangladesh. Upon reverse image search of the video’s keyframes, we found a similar video posted on a Facebook account on December 16, 2025. The caption, originally in Bengali, translates to: “In the final moments of the Charmonai Mahfil, thousands of Muslim devotees are boarding the launch.”

During the investigation, we also identified a building visible in the video shared on Facebook. A Google search revealed that it is the Al-Karim Jame Mosque in Charmonai, Barishal. Charmonai is an administrative union in the Barishal District, located in the Barishal Division of south-central Bangladesh.

We also found several media reports from Bangladesh, including Country Today and amaderbarisal.com, regarding the Charmonai Mahfil. According to these reports, “This Mahfil began in 1924. Over time, both the Mahfil and this spiritual movement became among the most prominent in the country. In 1987, the movement’s leader, Maulana Syed Muhammad Fazlul Karim Rahimullah, initiated direct political activities under the name Islami Shashantantra Andolan, now known as Islami Andolan Bangladesh. This Mahfil and movement hold a strong position in Bangladesh’s spiritual and political landscape.”

Furthermore, our team contacted Arkadipta Ghosh, a journalist from West Bengal. After reviewing the video, he confirmed that no such incident took place in the state.

Conclusion:

DFRAC’s fact-check makes it clear that the video circulating on social media is not from India. It is an old video of the Charmonai Mahfil in Barishal, Bangladesh. Therefore, the claim made by users is misleading.
