A video is going viral on social media showing several men assaulting a woman in a marketplace. Users sharing the video claim that a Dalit Hindu woman teacher was attacked by Muslim extremists in Bangladesh.
Sharing the video, a user named Yati Sharma wrote, “A Dalit Hindu woman teacher was attacked by Muslim extremists in Bangladesh.”
Another user, Deepak Sharma, shared the viral video with the caption: “Dalit Muslim unity. The Dalit teacher who gave her water to an upper-caste Muslim child when he was thirsty was chased and beaten on the streets… The incident is from the Kufanna area of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Jai Bhim + Meem… Long live the lions.”

Fact check:
DFRAC’s investigation found that the claim is misleading. The woman in the video is not Hindu and she is not a teacher. A Bangladeshi fact-checker, Shohanur Rahman, also confirmed that the woman is Muslim and a business entrepreneur who was attacked over a business-related dispute.
We first converted the viral video into keyframes and conducted a reverse image search. We found reports about the incident published by Bangladeshi media outlets, including The Daily Star, Manobkantha and Jago News/24. These reports identified the woman as Zakia Sultana. According to The Daily Star, a woman entrepreneur was publicly assaulted during a business dispute in Rajbari, and a video of the incident went viral on social media, drawing widespread attention. The footage shows police attempting to remove the woman from the scene while two men kick her. Police later took her to Rajbari Sadar Police Station for her safety. The woman was identified as Zakia Sultana, owner of Astha Poshak Shilpa, located in Kaderia Market in the Kapoor Bazar area of Rajbari town.
A report by Jago News/24 states that Zakia operates a clothing shop called Astha Fashion on the third floor of Kaderia Super Market in Rajbari’s Kapoor Bazar. She had recently been involved in a dispute with one of her female employees, Shahnaz Parveen Brishti. Zakia went to the market with several women and a promotional microphone, apparently in connection with the dispute. Some traders became upset with her and later approached her, asking her to refrain from such activities.An argument subsequently broke out and tensions escalated. Police arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control. Later, they escorted Zakia towards the main road of the market. According to eyewitnesses, several people standing at different locations along the roadside kicked her multiple times.
Meanwhile, Manobkantha reported that no case had yet been filed in connection with the public assault and harassment of woman entrepreneur Zakia Sultana in Rajbari. However, police said they had identified those involved in the incident and were making efforts to arrest them.(English Translation)
To gather further information, DFRAC also contacted Bangladeshi fact-checker Shohanur Rahman. He confirmed that the woman is not a Hindu teacher. According to him, she is a Muslim woman and business entrepreneur who was attacked over a business-related dispute. He further said that portraying her as a Hindu teacher was a deliberate attempt to spread a false narrative.
Conclusion:
The DFRAC fact check establishes that the viral video has been shared with a misleading religious angle. The woman seen in the video has been identified as Zakia Sultana, a Muslim business entrepreneur. Reports indicate that the incident was linked to a dispute involving her business and an employee, Shahnaz Parveen. The woman was not a Hindu teacher, contrary to the claim circulating on social media.
