Fact Check: Video of Cylinder Blast in Karnataka Shared with a Communal Spin

A CCTV footage is going viral on social media. The video shows a sudden explosion inside a house. The footage also captures a huge fireball emerging from the house following the blast. Users are sharing this CCTV footage with the claim that a man named “Gaffar Miyan” was testing a bomb inside his house and that the incident occurred during the alleged test.

Sharing the CCTV footage, a user named Dilip Kumar Singh wrote, “Modi ji’s Make in India campaign has suffered a setback. The great madrasa scientist Gaffar Miyan has departed for the 72 houris along with his entire family… This accident happened while he was testing a bomb at home.”

Similarly, a user named Mr. Mishra shared the footage and wrote, “When there were no CCTV cameras, we used to hear the news. Now we watch the ‘live broadcast’ itself… The great madrasa scientist ‘Abdul Gaffar’ has departed for the houris along with his entire family… The accident happened while he was testing a bomb at home.”

The DFRAC team found during its investigation that this was not a bomb blast, but CCTV footage of an LPG cylinder explosion. According to media reports, the footage is from an incident in the Jannat Nagar area of Dharwad, Karnataka, where an LPG cylinder exploded at the house of a man named Raja Saab. In connection with the incident, Vidyagiri Police in Dharwad also told DFRAC that the incident was not a bomb blast but an LPG cylinder explosion.

For the investigation, our team first converted the video into keyframes and then conducted reverse image searches on the individual frames. During the search, we found a report published on the Reuters website containing the viral CCTV footage. The report stated that on August 25, 2026, a domestic LPG cylinder exploded at a house in the Jannat Nagar area of Dharwad, Karnataka, following a gas leak. The explosion caused panic in the area. The blast was reportedly so powerful that the gas cylinder was propelled out of the house, while a motorcycle parked outside was also thrown several metres away.

Further investigation led us to reports published by Kannada-language media outlets Vishwavani and NewsOneWSU.com regarding the incident.According to the Vishwavani report, a house was completely destroyed following a cylinder explosion in the city. The incident took place on Tuesday in Jannat Nagar, Dharwad. One person was seriously injured and admitted to KIMS Hospital. The report stated that a cylinder exploded at Raja Saab’s house and that the explosion was captured on a CCTV.camera. The intensity of the blast completely destroyed the house, while Raja Saab sustained serious injuries and was admitted to KIMS Hospital.

The report published by NewsOneWSU.com stated that a powerful cylinder explosion destroyed a house in Jannat Nagar and left one person seriously injured, causing concern among local residents. According to the police, the explosion occurred after a pipe connected to an LPG cylinder broke, resulting in a gas leak inside the house. The incident took place at the residence of Raja Saab in Jannat Nagar. The explosion was so powerful that it caused extensive damage to the building and scattered household belongings. The scene of the cylinder explosion was also captured by a CCTV camera installed at the house.According to the preliminary information provided by the police, gas leaked into the house after the pipe connected to the LPG cylinder ruptured. It was reportedly when Raja Saab switched on the television that the accumulated gas caught fire, triggering the explosion.

Further investigation found that the same CCTV footage was also posted on the Facebook page hubballi_city. The English-language caption accompanying the post stated that a powerful LPG cylinder explosion took place at a house in Jannat Nagar, Dharwad, on August 25. It further claimed that the force of the explosion caused the cylinder to land outside the house and sent a nearby motorcycle several metres away. The terrifying incident was captured on CCTV. The post also stated that a person identified as Raja Saab/Rajeshab sustained severe burn injuries and was admitted to KIMS Hospital in Hubballi for further treatment.

Our team contacted the administrator of the hubballi_city Facebook page using the contact number provided on the page. The administrator told DFRAC that the viral incident was not a bomb blast but an LPG cylinder explosion.Our team also contacted the Vidyagiri Police Station in connection with the incident. The police confirmed that the viral CCTV footage shows an LPG cylinder explosion. The police dismissed as misleading the claim that a bomb blast occurred at the house of “Gaffar Miyan” while he was conducting a test.

The DFRAC fact check establishes that the claim circulating on social media is misleading.
