Fact Check: video from Bihar falsely linked with Dalit community

On social media, a video of a mob thrashing a young man tied to a tree has gone viral. While sharing this video users claim that “Don’t let the society turn into zombies and terrorists out of hatred for Muslims @narendramodi ji, this beating is of a Dalit but this poison will spread everywhere when hatred for a particular community is promoted”. (English Translation)

Fact Check

During the investigation, DFRAC found that the claim was false. We found multiple media reports regarding this video. According to ‘Hindustan’ report published on 29 Sept, 2024 “In Paitarpur village of Bariyarpur police station area, villagers beat up a youth named Deepak Thakur on the charge of child theft. After Munni Devi’s allegation, the youth was caught and handed over to the police”. (English Translation)

Furthermore, we also found a report from ‘Dainik Bhaskar’ published on 1 Oct, 2024 “In Vaishali, Bihar, a youth was tied to a tree and beaten with sticks, VIDEO: He was surrounded from all sides and beaten with sticks; people had caught him on suspicion of child theft”. (English Translation).

Conclusion

It is evident from the DFRAC’s fact check that the video was from Bihar and a young man tied to a tree named Deepak thakur. It has nothing to do with Dalit community. Therefore, the claim of social media users is misleading.
