On investigation, DFRAC found multiple reports regarding this video. According to ‘New York Post’ report published on 2 Nov 2021 “An Afghan father says he felt “broken” after he was forced to sell his 9-year-old daughter as a child bride in order to afford food for his family. Abdul Malik broke down in tears last week on the day of the sale of his daughter, Parwana, to a 55-year-old buyer named Qorban”.
Furthermore, we also found a report from ‘Dailymail’ published on 3 Dec 2021 stating “A nine-year-old girl who her father sold to a 55-year-old man as a child bride in Afghanistan has been rescued by a charity. Parwana Malik was sold for the equivalent of £1,600 in land, sheep, and cash to a stranger named Qorban so her father Abdul Malik could pay for food in the Taliban-ruled nation”.
Conclusion
It is evident from the DFRAC’s fact check that this viral video dates back to 2021 and the man was forced to sell his 9-year-old daughter as a child bride in order to afford food for his family. Therefore, the claim of social media users is misleading.
