The video, in the Bengali language, shows a group of Muslims engaging in an argument with shopkeepers and people on the street. Social media users claim that the video is from Bangladesh and that the Muslim community is harassing Hindu shopkeepers.
While sharing this video a user wrote, “Look at how Hindus are treated in Bangladesh. But the Indian Government’s indifference is even more cruel than any real crime. Islamic extremists in Bangladesh are torturing the Hindus during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan for having meals during the day.”
Some users have also shared the video with captions in the Bengali language.
Fact Check:
To verify the authenticity of the viral video, the DFRAC team converted the video into multiple frames and conducted a reverse search. During the process, we came across a report published on a website that revealed that the incident took place in the Kachua Sub-district of Chandpur district in Bangladesh. The report stated that a radical group called “Hifazat-e-Ramadan” has been creating chaos in the market by raiding tea stalls, restaurants, and hotels for low-income earners’ residents under the pretext of protecting the sanctity of Ramadan. The group leaders are attacking various establishments, beating people and even ordering sick people to leave the premises.
The report further revealed that a Hindu shop owner has put up banners in his shop, requesting Muslims not to eat meals into his establishment during Ramadan, and threatened that he would not be responsible for their safety if they did not comply. The radical group has forced other Hindu shop owners to put up similar banners in their shops.
Conclusion:
The claim that the viral video is showing Muslims harassing Hindu shopkeepers in Bangladesh is false. The incident captured in the video is related to the radical group called “Hifazat-e-Ramadan” creating disturbance during the holy month of Ramadan. Therefore, the social media claim is misleading, and users are advised not to share it further.
