DFRAC Editor November 1, 2022
Abdul Basit

Talking about the recent visit of PM of India Narendra Modi to Ladakh, Former Pakistan Ambassador, Abdul Basit referred to Subramanian Swamy as a former BJP president and a present BJP MP.

In the above video uploaded by Kaleidoscope, at 1:50 mins he can be heard saying the same. The video was uploaded seven days ago with the title, “Subramanian Swamy Fears China-Pak Attack on Kashmir.”

Fact Check

Subramanian Swamy is a renowned politician, economist, and statistician. He is a former professor of Mathematical Economics at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. He was a long-time member of the Janata Party and served as its president until 2013. After that, Janata Party merged with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). But he never held the post of President of the BJP Party.

List of the Last four presidents of the BJP

According to Wikipedia sources, from 2009 to 2013, Nitin Gadkari was the BJP president, then in 2013, Rajnath Singh took the charge of the BJP president. He resigned from the party presidency to assume the position of Home Minister. Then, Amit Shah was appointed as the party president from 2014 to 2020. Since 2020, Jagat Prakash Nadda is serving as the president of the BJP party.

From 1974–76, Swamy was elected as a Member of the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh, from the ticket of the Janata Party.  Furthermore, he was elected as a Member of Lok Sabha from Mumbai North-East in 1977–80, a Member of Lok Sabha from Mumbai North-East 1980–84, a Member of Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh 1988–94, Member of Lok Sabha from Madurai 1998–99, on a Janata Party ticket.  He was nominated as a Member of Rajya Sabha from 26 April 2016 – 24 April 2022. But currently, he is not member of Parliament as claimed by Basit.

Conclusion

Therefore, from this DFRAC fact check it is clear that Basit’s claim that “Subramanian Swamy was BJP president and is currently MP from BJP is false.”
