Fact-Check: Old image of military wreckage shared as images from paramilitary attacks in Manipur

DFRAC Editor December 3, 2021

On November 13, an attack took place on paramilitary forces in Manipur’s Churachandpur district resulting in the deaths of 7 people including a commander and his family. The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and the Manipur Naga People’s Front (MNPF) claimed responsibility for the attack.

Amidst this, an image of a military wreckage was shared hundreds of times of Facebook and Twitter with the claim that the wreckage was from the recent attack.

Another claim on Facebook

Fact-Check:

We performed a reverse image search on Google and found that the image was taken by AFP in 2015 with the caption, “In this photograph taken on June 4, 2015, Indian security personnel stand alongside the smouldering vehicle wreckage at the scene of an attack on a military convoy in a remote area of Chandel district, about 120 kilometres (75 miles) southwest of northeastern Manipur’s state capital Imphal.”

Since the image was taken in 2015 from a different attack, this claim is misleading.
