After the tragic death of the Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi on 19th May, a number of fake and misleading stories have been doing rounds on the internet. One such picture claiming to be from the funeral procession of the late President is going viral on social media (Twitter). People are referring to the huge crowd in the picture saying millions of people attended Raisi’s funeral procession.
FACT CHECK
The DFRAC team investigated the claim and researched about the original source of the viral picture. During the process we found that the picture is in fact from the funeral procession of Gen. Qassem Soleimani and others who were killed in Iraq by a U.S. drone strike on 3rd January, 2020. The picture is from 5th January, 2020 from the city of Mashhad, Iran, when a large number of people mourned the death of their heroes.
The picture has been shared in a number of articles , sharing the story about the U.S. attack and the effect it had on the country of Iran.
CONCLUSION
Thus, the viral post with the picture claiming it to be from the funeral procession of the late Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi is misleading.
