Soon after a plane crash was reported in Afghanistan, a claim was widely circulated with the video.
Claim:
Users on the internet are sharing the video with the claim, “Indian passenger plane crashes in Afghanistan, reported to be heading for Moscow”
Many media houses like DD Tamil News, RT _Com and Conflict Watch Hq have shared the viral claim.
Fact Check
We investigated the viral claim. We checked for the official Twitter Account of the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India. Officials at the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) clarified that the plane didn’t belong to India and said it was a Morocco-registered DF10. At present, the number of casualties in the accident is not known.
Multiple media houses also reported the news. The Hindustan Times article from 21 January 2024 reported that the Union ministry clarified that the aircraft was an air ambulance flying from Thailand to Moscow. However, the ministry added that the plane landed at Gaya Airport for refuelling purposes.
Conclusion
Thus, from the fact check it is clear that the viral claim is misleading. The plane didn’t belong to India. It was a Morocco-registered DF10 flying from Thailand to Moscow
