Fact-Check: Image of policemen mopping up blood is not from the recent lathi charge on farmers

DFRAC Editor August 31, 2021

On August 28, 2021, the ongoing farmers protest took yet another violent turn. Farmers reached the Bastara toll plaza to protest outside an event attended by Haryana’s Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. The protest soon turned violent when the police started to lathi charge upon the farmers resulting in the death of Sushil Kajal, who died due to injuries.

The lathi charge drew a volatile response from social media where people called out the brutality of the police.

Several images of injured farmers were being shared on social media, one of which showed two policemen mopping up what looks like blood on the road.

This image was posted by several users on Twitter who claimed this to be an image from the lathi charge that took place at the border.

Fact-Check:

However, upon reverse searching the image, we found that the image actually is from 2013 when a CISF jawan was killed in a militant attack in Kashmir. When we reverse search the image we were led to several news articles that reported on the incident.

Image used on the 2013 article on Indian Express

Therefore, this claim is fake.
