Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Did Not Criticise PM Modi; Viral Statement Is Fake

A statement attributed to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is being circulated on social media. The claim accompanying the statement alleges that Rekha Gupta criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The viral postcard carrying the purported statement reads: “Prime Minister Modi ji will take the entire party down with him as he leaves. It has started to feel that the end of such a big party will come so soon—I never imagined this even in my dreams. – Rekha Gupta, Chief Minister, Delhi.”

Sharing the postcard, a user named VN Yadav wrote, “Whether knowingly or unknowingly, the Delhi Chief Minister is right. After being removed from power this time, the BJP will not return to power for the next 100 years.”

Fact check:

The DFRAC team investigated the viral postcard and found that Delhi CM Rekha Gupta did not make any statement criticising PM Modi. The viral statement is fake. Speaking to DFRAC, Dr Anil Gupta, Chief Spokesperson of the Delhi BJP, also denied the viral claim and said that CM Rekha Gupta had not made any such statement.

Our team searched Google using several relevant keywords to verify the viral postcard but did not find any such news report published by any credible media organisation. If Rekha Gupta had made a statement criticising PM Modi, it would have been a major political development and widely reported by the media. However, we found several recent media reports in which Rekha Gupta praised PM Modi. We found a report published by Aaj Tak, in which Rekha Gupta said: “I express my gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the benefit of having governments with the same vision at the Centre and in Delhi is now being reflected in the development of Delhi. Under the guidance of the Prime Minister, a separate Department of Capital Development has been created under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for the development of Delhi.”

Similarly, an ABP News report quoted CM Rekha Gupta as saying: “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the country has adopted the national resolve of Viksit Bharat 2047, which has now become the resolve of every state, city and citizen. Continuous efforts are being made, with the cooperation of the central government, to make Delhi a modern, capable city with better facilities for its citizens. Delhi’s role will be extremely important in achieving the goal of Viksit Bharat.”

For further verification, our team contacted Dr Anil Gupta, Chief Spokesperson of the Delhi BJP. He said that a fake statement attributed to CM Rekha Gupta was being circulated. He stated, “Rekha Gupta cannot make such a statement about the universally respected leader of the world, Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Under the leadership of Rekha Gupta, Delhi is progressing, and under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the country is progressing.”

Conclusion:

The DFRAC fact check makes it clear that a fake statement is being circulated on social media in the name of Delhi CM Rekha Gupta. Rekha Gupta did not make the statement criticising PM Modi. Therefore, the viral postcard is fake, and the claim made by social media users is false.
