In recent days, students staged protests at Jantar Mantar in Delhi over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination. Following sustained demands by the protesting students, Dharmendra Pradhan resigned from the post of Union Education Minister. Several videos related to the protests have gone viral on social media. One such video featured Delhi Police DCP Sumit Jha, accompanied by claims that he had resigned from his post in support of the students.
Users sharing the video claimed that DCP Sumit Jha was under pressure to take unnecessary action against the protesting students. According to the claim, instead of complying with the alleged directions, he chose to resign from his position. An X user named TaPaSvi MaHaRaJ shared the video with the caption: “Delhi Police Deputy Commissioner (DCP) Sumit Jha’s conscience has finally awakened. ‘I chose the path of serving the truth, not selling lies.’ After refusing to frame protesting students, the Indian police officer resigned.“
Another user, Coach Raja Ansari_INC, posted the same video and wrote: “Salute to such an IPS officer. DCP Sumit Jha has stood by the truth and resigned from his post. He has exposed how the government and the police were pressuring officers to spread lies.”
Fact check:
DFRAC’s investigation found the claim to be false and misleading. DCP Sumit Jha has not resigned, nor did he make any statement resembling the one heard in the viral video. Our investigation found that the viral clip had been digitally altered using AI-generated audio. Delhi Police also confirmed to DFRAC that the officer never made such remarks and that the circulating video is AI-manipulated.
We began our investigation by extracting keyframes from the viral video and conducting a reverse image search. This led us to the original video uploaded by Delhi Police. In the authentic footage, DCP Sumit Jha is seen addressing the public about misinformation campaigns being run by Pakistan-based propaganda accounts during the Delhi protests and informing people that several such accounts had been blocked.The caption of the original post reads: “480 Pakistan-based social media handles involved in coordinated misinformation campaigns were identified and blocked. Delhi Police appeals to students and youth to be wary of such foreign accounts spreading rumours to mislead the situation.”
During further investigation, we found another post from the official X handle of Delhi Police debunking the viral video. The police clarified that the circulating clip was AI-generated and stated: FACT CHECK: FAKE VIDEO ⚠️The viral video claiming Delhi Police DCP Sumit Jha resigned over student protests is completely fake and AI-generated. The authentic footage, in which the officer addresses the public regarding active misinformation campaigns, is available. Kindly refrain from forwarding or sharing the edited clip, as it is part of an orchestrated misinformation campaign.
Additionally, PIB Fact Check also labelled the viral video as fake. PIB stated: “A video is being shared on social media claiming that Delhi Police DCP Sumit Jha has resigned with immediate effect in support of the Jantar Mantar protest. This is an AI-generated fake video. Be cautious of such content being circulated to spread misinformation among the public.”
For further verification, the DFRAC team contacted Delhi Police directly. The police confirmed that the viral video is fake and that DCP Sumit Jha has not resigned.
Conclusion:
DFRAC’s fact check confirms that the viral claim is misleading. The circulating video of DCP Sumit Jha has been digitally altered using AI-generated audio. He has neither resigned from his position nor made the statements attributed to him in the viral clip. Therefore, the claim being circulated on social media is false.
