Fact Check: Viral video of flash floods falsely linked to Himachal

Fact Check en

Flash floods triggered by two cloudbursts struck several areas of Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba and Mandi districts on Sunday, even as the death toll since the onset of monsoon on June 20 reached 78.

A video showing heavy flash floods is being circulated with the claim that it depicts the recent floods in Himachal Pradesh. The text on the video is in Punjabi. The Punjabi text, when translated, states,” Don’t go Punjabi, and the Himachal are very angry”

Another user was also found sharing a similar claim, which can be viewed here.

Fact Check

However, upon investigation, we found this claim to be misleading. The same video was traced to a TikTok account and a YouTube channel, both of which carried the caption: “A massive mudslide struck in Danba of Sichuan Province, China.”

We also found the video featured on http://weather.net, which reported: “A huge mudslide destroys a village in Danba, China! The residents were evacuated in time. It was triggered by heavy rains, with a maximum precipitation of 23.2 mm per hour; the flow carried away over 200,000 m³ of sediment.”

Conclusion

While it is true that heavy rains have caused serious disruptions in many parts of Himachal Pradesh, this particular video has no connection with the state. The viral claim is therefore misleading; the footage is actually from China.
