Fact Check: Viral video claiming to show Pakistan’s retaliation on India is old and false

Fact Check en Featured Misleading-en

A video circulating online shows drone strikes and missile launches in an urban area, causing widespread destruction. Users sharing the footage claim it depicts a scene from India, allegedly targeted by Pakistan in a powerful retaliatory strike following an escalation by the Modi government, during which a Russian S-400 defence system was reportedly destroyed.

Fact Check

Upon investigation, we found the claim to be misleading. A reverse image search of the keyframes from the video led us to a post by Al Jazeera on October 2, 2024. The post featured the same viral video. The caption with the video featured “Videos show dozens of missiles flying over Tel Aviv, with some of them landing. The Israeli military says the missiles were fired by Iran and that a ‘large number’ had been intercepted.”

Additionally, we found that the same video was shared by the official X (formerly Twitter) account of the Embassy of Israel in Australia on October 2, 2024. According to the caption, the footage depicts Iran launching over 180 missiles into Israel.

The caption stated:
“Over 180 missiles were launched from the terror country – Iran – hitting all parts of Israel, while terrorists opened fire on Jaffa’s light rail, leaving at least 8 dead and others critically injured. Israel is facing war on seven different fronts, each with the same goal: to destroy the only stable, democratic country in the region.”

Conclusion

Thus, from the fact check, it is evident that the viral video is not related to India-Pakistan tensions. The video is old footage from a ballistic missile attack on Tel Aviv, Israel, carried out by Iran in 2024. It was originally uploaded by Al Jazeera on October 2, 2024, and is unrelated to the 2025 India-Pakistan conflict.
