Claim

A video of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is going viral on social media. It is being claimed that Mamata Banerjee attended an event held in the Red Road area of Kolkata on Eid, where she called Hinduism a dirty religion. Although, claims of her extended her greeting for Eid to the Muslim Community are also coming online.

An X user has posted a video of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. This user claims that she has insulted the Hindu religion and called it a 'dirty religion.'

A verified user on social media site, X, Arun Yadav has shared the viral video with a caption saying, “ममता बग़दादी के अनुसार हिंदू धर्म एक गंदा धर्म है, देख रहे हो ना बंगालियों”, a rough translation of it is, “According to Mamata Baghdadi, Hinduism is a dirty religion. Are you watching this, Bengalis?”

A similar claim is shared on social media, where an X user is similar claims about the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Meanwhile, another user, अलका हिंदू (समाज सेविका), Alka Hindu (social worker) in English, has shared a screengrab from the video. She has shared it with a caption saying, “According to Mamata, Hinduism is dirty, which is why she is getting dirty people killed in Bengal. What’s wrong in what she’s doing? The real wrongdoers are those Hindu leaders who call themselves Hindus but are sitting idle and watching the spectacle.”

Fact Check

To investigate the viral video, the DFRAC conducted a keyword search. This search revealed a video on uploaded on YouTube. This video is by News 18 Bangla and was uploaded on March 31, 2025. Banerjee’s full speech can be heard in this video.

While, listening her speech, she talks about communal harmony and criticizes right-wing political parties and organizations. Between 06:38 to 07:40 on timestamp in the video, Mamata Banerjee can be heard saying:

“People who work in the army have only one identity, whether they are Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, or Christian. Look at what Ramakrishna said. Look at what Swami Vivekananda said. We follow the religion of Ramakrishna, we follow the religion of Swami Vivekananda, but we do not follow a dirty religion that has been created by a ‘jumla’ party. That religion is actually against Hinduism. And Hinduism is not against you, Christianity is not against you. There are some political leaders who do business in the name of religion. They trade it. We will shut down their shop of religious trade.”

Conclusion

Therefore, the fact check by DFRAC makes it clear that the claim made on viral video is misleading. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee did not utter ‘a dirty religion’ to denote Hinduism. Instead, she said, “we do not follow a dirty religion that has been created by a ‘jumla’ party.”
