Videos from Japan and Islamabad falsely linked to Delhi Earthquake tremors
Delhi recently experienced earthquake tremors in the early morning of 17 February 2025, startling the city. Amid this, several videos are being shared online with claims that they captured the earthquake in Delhi.
One user shared a video, stating, “Strong tremors were felt in Delhi this morning. The shaking lasted for several seconds, causing widespread panic as people rushed out of their homes. The earthquake was recorded at a magnitude of 4.0 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter in Delhi.”

Fact Check
Upon investigation, we found that two out of the three shared videos were from different locations and not related to the recent earthquake in Delhi.
First Video: The clip showing water spilling from a bathtub was originally posted on Weather.com on February 23, 2021, with the caption “Water Flies from Tub During Strong Japan Earthquake.”

Second Video: This footage was found on a Pakistani Twitter account, Rasala.pk, posted on February 17, 2025. The caption read: “Just look at the blast and wave, it was something else. Still thinking about it. CCTV video of last night’s #Earthquake in #Islamabad.”

Further, we checked the date shown on the keyframes obtained from the video, the date was 15th February 2025 time mentioned was 22:48:15. Furthermore, we found a ‘The Express Tribune’ report of 15th February 2025 informing that a strong earthquake jolted struck the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, sending shockwaves of fear among residents who rushed out of their homes and offices reciting prayers.

Third Video: This is the only authentic clip. It was published by India Today on February 17, 2025, the day the earthquake struck Delhi. The caption read: “Caught on CCTV: Moment when a 4.0-magnitude earthquake hit Delhi-NCR.” The footage shows an iron pipe connected to an overhead water tank shaking during the tremors.

Conclusion
While Delhi did experience a 4.0-magnitude earthquake, our investigation found that two out of the three viral videos were unrelated and falsely attributed to the event. The first video was from Japan (2021), and the second was from Islamabad (2025).
