Fact Check: Viral video of One-Legged Girl Hopping is Misleading; She Received Assistance in 2022

A viral video on social media shows a girl hopping on to her way to school. The user has congratulated the girl on her courage and pleaded the Bihar government to provide her with facilities. The videos with claim was widely shared in December 2024 and January 2025.
Fact check
On investigation, the video was found to be old. Upon conducting a reverse image search using a keyframe from the video, news reports with the image came in our investigation.
An ABP news report from 25 May 2022, stated a 10 year old Seema Kumari from Bihar’s Maoist-infested Jamui district was hopping on her way to school. This young girl with an amputated foot, is seen hopping on her one leg to school. Many celebrities and politicians posted on their social media about the resilience of the young girl.
A follow-up report by NDTV from 28 May 2022, confirmed that Seema Kumari had received the Prosthetic limb, enabling to walk on both feet. An IAS Officer Awanish Sharan, of 2009-batch from Chhattisgarh cadre, shared an image of her with the prosthetic leg. He appreciated the role of social media in bringing attention to her case.
Additionally, a TOI report, from May 2022, mentions that Seema could walk again after receiving an artificial limb provided by the Bihar State Education Department. Officials stated that the prosthetic limb was made by the Bhagalpur unit of the Bihar Education Project Council (BEPC) and that the education department is conducting a statewide survey of children with disabilities to offer similar assistance.
Conclusion
Thus, the viral video is old. The video dates back to May 2022. She received a prosthetic limb the same year, following widespread attention and support.
