A video is going viral with the claim, “100 tons of gold found under Bashar al-Assad’s palace. Praise be to God and thanks be to God. It seems that the days of prosperity in Syria are about to begin, God willing”.
The video shows a gold mine, followed by a cut of an interview with Bashar al-Assad. Other users circulated the same video, which can be found here, here, and here.
Fact check
Upon investigation conducted at DFRAC, it was revealed that the claim in the video is fake. No such media reports confirmed anything related to it. We conducted a reverse image search of key frames from the video and found that the part of the video that shows the gold mine is not related to Bashar al-Assad’s palace. Rather, the video about the gold mine was uploaded to TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook from June 2024 onwards, with no link to Bashar al-Assad.
Other users also uploaded and shared the same video on different Social media platforms such as Instagram and Youtube with no relevance to Bashar al-Assad.
Furthermore, it was revealed that the interview with Bashar al-Assad is also unrelated to the claim. We found the same interview with Bashar al-Assad on TikTok and other social media platforms, where he discussed Syria.
Conclusion
From the above fact check, it is evident that the viral video’s claim about the gold being found buried under Bashar al Assad’s palace is false. Thus, we conclude that no media reports were found to corroborate the claim.
