Fact Check

During the investigation, DFRAC found the claim to be false. We found data from ‘PoundSterling’ which states: “In 2013, the highest level of a dollar was 68.8485, reached on 28/08/2013. The lowest level of a dollar in 2013 was 52.9469, reached on 04/02/2013. The average level of a dollar in 2013 was 58.5755.”

Furthermore, we also found data from ‘Exchange Rate UK’ mentioning: “This is the US Dollar (USD) to Indian Rupee (INR) exchange rate history data page for the year 2013, covering 365 days of USD INR historical data. Best exchange rate: 67.9576 INR on 28 Aug 2013. Average exchange rate in 2013: 58.5501 INR. Worst exchange rate: 53.1305 INR on 05 Feb 2013.”

Conclusion

It is evident from DFRAC’s fact check that the claim about the Dollar being equal to ₹40 before 2014 is false. The actual exchange rates in 2013 were significantly higher, with the best rate being around ₹67.95 and the average rate around ₹58.55. Therefore, the claim made by social media users is misleading.
