On social media, an image of a UN truck with a Hezbollah flag on it has gone viral. While sharing this image users wrote “Here is a photo of an UNIFIL truck with a Hezbollah flag on it. Are all UN agencies helping terrorists”.
Moreover, several users shared this video and made similar claims. The link can be seen here, here and here
Fact Check
During the investigation, DFRAC found that the claim was false. We found a video carrying same truck on X handle of ‘kaisos1987’ uploaded on 1st Apr,2024 with the caption “In the village of Barishit in southern Lebanon, residents attacked a UNIFIL force patrol that entered one of the residential neighborhoods. The Lebanese army intervened and removed the force from the village. Among other things, you can see that the vehicle’s tires were punctured and a Hezbollah flag was hung on it”.
Furthermore, we also found a report from ‘Israel-alma.org’ published on 2 Apr, 2024 stating “In these attacks, Hezbollah launched rockets toward the communities of Rosh Hanikra and Betze. In the video attached below you can see a UNIFIL patrol that entered the village of Baraachit in southern Lebanon (April 01). The patrol was attacked and had to be rescued by the Lebanese army. The attackers hung a Hezbollah flag on the UNIFIL vehicle and punctured its tires.”
Conclusion
It is evident from the DFRAC’s fact check that this photo is from April 2024 when Hezbollah claimed responsibility for 6 attacks against Israel and the image is taken from the video dated April 2024 where the attackers hung a Hezbollah flag on the UNIFIL vehicle and punctured its tires. It does not show any support by UN for Hezbollah. Therefore, the claim of social media users is misleading.
