An image of an individual has been widely shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) with the claim that police in Faridpur, Bangladesh have arrested Sanjit Biswas, a 45-year-old from India, in connection with the vandalism of idols at two Hindu temples.
An account with the username @nazmulj660 posted the image of the individual and wrote: “Police in Faridpur have arrested Sanjit Biswas, a 45-year-old from India, in connection with the vandalism of idols at two Hindu temples, Hari Mandir and Kali Mandir. The incidents occurred on the night of September 14″
Furthermore, another user MG Shahidul Haque(retd) posted a link to a news article and made a similar claim.
Fact-check
To verify the authenticity of the above viral claim, the DFRAC team searched some keywords on Google in this regard. We discovered some recently published reports from Views Bangladesh, the Business Standard & Daily Sun. The reports revealed that the arrested man, identified as an Indian national, for allegedly desecrating Hindu idols in Faridpur, is a mentally challenged Bangladeshi.
As per reports, Faridpur’s Additional Superintendent of Police said that after the circulation of this news on social media, the arrestee’s father Nishikant Biswas revealed to the Police that Sanjit, who had travelled to India for work around 24-25 years ago, returned to Bangladesh and subsequently went missing about four years ago. Sanjit has had no contact with his family since then and is known to have frequently traveled to India. His father revealed that Sanjit is mentally sick.
