This week Ganesh Chaturthi celebration are on full scale. Amidst this, a viral collage showing Lord Ganesh idol carried by a policeman and keeping inside the police van has been rife on social media. Sharing the viral collage, users are sharing that Karnataka police “arrested” Lord Ganesha during the Ganesh Utsav and hindered the celebration.
The users are claiming, ” For the first time in the history of India, Ganesh Ji was arrested by the police of a state Yes, the Congress police of the Congress government of Karnataka arrested Ganesh ji Why do Hindus vote for Congress to get insulted?”
Following this, multiple users were found on X platform, sharing the viral claim about Lord Ganesha Idol being arrested, which you can view here, here and here.
Fact Check
DFRAC investigated the viral claim by using the keyword search on Google. Upon investigation, we found the claim is false. According to media reports from Times of India , Hindustan Times and News 18, it was found that the incident occurred in Bengaluru. Here a group of protestors was demonstrating in front of the Town Hall against the violence during Ganesh Visarjan in Mandya. The police detained the protestors carrying a small Lord Ganesha idol.
Furthermore, we checked for the official X account of DCP of Central Division, Bengaluru City. They mentioned, “On Sept 13, 2024, Hindu groups protested at Bengaluru’s Town Hall over the Nagamangala Ganesh procession incident, defying a High Court order. Demonstrators detained. Ganapati idol was later immersed by authorities with rituals.”
Why people were protesting?
According to a media reports, a Ganesh Chaturthi procession in Nagamangala, Mandya, Karnataka, was halted for an extended period in front of a mosque. This led to tensions between the two groups, and it is alleged that members of the Muslim community threw stones at the procession. The police intervened to manage the situation and resorted to a lathicharge to control the crowd. Following the lathicharge, protests erupted in front of the police station, during which roadside shops and motorcycles were set on fire.

Conclusion: Thus from the fact check it is clear that the claim that Karnataka police ‘arrested’ Lord Ganesha during a protest is false. The idol was taken as part of standard police procedures during a protest, and it was immersed with full respect and rituals later on.
