On social media, a video showing a woman doing sit-ups went viral. While sharing the video users claim that “A HorrorStory HindusUnderAttack This is Jyotika Basu-Chatterjee from Bangladesh. A woman who ran a humanitarian organization. She worked tirelessly on education and health for Muslims with Hindu funds. She helped all the women nearby, be they small or big; whenever anyone needed help…”
Fact Check
On investigation, DFRAC found that the name of the woman was Sagarika Akter, not a Hindu but a Muslim who was the leader of Chhatra League, an Awami League’s student wing which was against the quota protesters.
Further, we also found a similar video on Facebook uploaded on 17 July 2024 with the caption “Sagarika Akter, student league leader of Eden Women’s College, wanted to run away, but the common girl students stopped her and held her ears”.
Conclusion
It is evident from the DFRAC’s fact check that the woman shown in the video belongs to a Muslim community and is a student. There is no communal angle found in this video. Therefore, the claim of social media users is misleading.
