Images from 2020 Helicopter Crash falsely associated with Iranian Prez Raisi’s chopper crash

The Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi died in chopper crash on Sunday as it was crossing through mountains terrain in heavy fog. After this news an image is being widely shared on social media platforms with the claim that this is the first image of remains of the crash of Iran’s president Ebrahim Raisi. Not only this, but some similar images are also being shared along with a similar claim.

An account with the username@EdmundEast shared an image on X and wrote: “A photo of the crash site of President Raisi’s helicopter is published by the Iranian agency ISNA”

Fact-Check

A reverse-search image of the above viral images led us to a report by a Persian media outlet, published in 2020. According to this report, the wreckage of the crashed plane was found in Mazandaran Province. A cessna plane crashed during a police operation due to adverse weather conditions and reduced visibility of the pilot.

Moreover, other images of this mishap can also be seen in this report which are quite similar to the rest of the viral images shared by several users on X.

Conclusion

DFRAC’s fact-check proves that the viral images date back to 2020 and shows wreckage of the crashed plane in Mazandaran Province, not from the Iranian prez’s Raisi helicopter crash.

Hence, the claim of social media users is false.
