Amidst the G20 summit in India, a claim is circulating. It claims the Indian government intends to purchase 50 bulletproof Audi cars for the event, potentially incurring a cost exceeding Rs 400 crore.
DNA News published the article regarding the viral claim. Subsequently, it was shared on X by Saket Gokhale, a Member of Parliament affiliated with All India Trinamool Congress.
His tweet read,” For a 2 day PR event for PM Modi in the run up to the 2024 elections, the Modi Govt is spending Rs. 400 crores for buying 50 armored cars.”
Fact Check
Upon investigation, it was discovered by DFRAC that there is no official declaration from the government. It has been reported that the government has procured 20 bulletproof vehicles for a sum of ₹18 crore. These cars are for providing security provisions for foreign dignitaries. The provision of bulletproof cars for Heads of State and Head of Government is a standard protocol followed during visits by foreign dignitaries.
Furthermore, PIB also released the statement calling out the viral claim as false.
Conclusion
From the fact check it is evident that the viral claim made by Saket Gokhale is misleading. The Government of India has leased 20 Audi Bullet Resistant cars for 18 crores to accommodate the security needs of G20 visiting Leaders.
