Fact-Check: Bangladesh’s Video Showing Minor Thrashed in Madarsa Goes Viral as India’s UP

After the case of a UP teacher urging the students to slap a Muslim Kid, a video of Bangladesh, showing a minor brutally thrashed inside a Madarsa, has been shared online on social media platforms, as it belongs to India’s UP. Social media users are associating the viral video with the case of a Muslim boy slapped in UP.

The case of a Muslim boy slapped by his classmates on the instructions of their class teacher has been hitting the headlines these days after a viral video, purportedly showed her making students slap a Muslim boy inside the classroom. Furthermore, the teacher has been found defending her action by saying: “I am handicapped so I made some students slap him so that he would start doing his homework. His uncle was the one who asked me to do so.”

 Sweta Srivastava, who claims herself a social worker posted a video on Twitter and wrote: ” Does this Muslim kid deserve an education in Madarsa? Mohabbat ki dukaan please some Paigam to maulana.”

Re-quoting this video, a user named Abhishek Kumar Kushwaha says: “He wanted to ask, “Tripta Tyagi” did wrong, but if Maulvi is beaten, it will work, won’t it?”

Moreover, several users shared this video making similar claims.

 Fact-Check

To verify the authenticity of the viral video, the DFRAC team converted it into some keyframes and reverse-searched it on Google. The team found some news articles during this process.

According to a news article published by Dhaka Tribune on March 10, 2021, “ A madrasa teacher accused of torturing an eight-year-old residential student, after a video of the incident went viral on social media, has been arrested from Chittagong’s Hathazari area. Md Yahya, a teacher at Al Markazul Quran Islamic Academy, was arrested on Wednesday”.

In addition to that, the News Website, The Business Standard of Bangladesh, also published this news mentioning: “Police have arrested a madrasa teacher after a video of him viciously beating up an eight-year-old student over a trifling matter at a madrassa in Chittagong’s Hathazari went viral. The teacher named Mawlana Yahia was arrested from form his home at Sarafvata in Rangunia on Wednesday evening”.

Conclusion

DFRAC’s Fact-Check proves that the viral video does not belong to UP but rather belongs to Bangladesh’s Chattogram. Hence, the claim of social media users is false.
