Recently, Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath gave a speech in which he claimed that no riots took place in UP in the last 6 years. He also mentioned that the women in his state are safe as no crime happened against them.
Fact Check:
To investigate the claim DFRAC team searched for the data on the official site of National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB). We found a completely different picture in this scenario.
Investigation on Total Riots in UP
Overall, there has been a decline in the figures of riots since 2017, but there has been an increase of 7.2% between 2019-20.(Refer to page no 33)
Along with Maharashtra and Bihar, UP has joined the top five states where a maximum number of riots have taken place.
In 2016, a total of 8,016 riots were reported in Uttar Pradesh, before the BJP came to power in the state. In 2017, BJP came in the power in Uttar Pradesh and according to NCRB Data, since then, this number has increased to 8,900 in 2017. It was 8,908 in the year 2018, 5,714 in the year 2019, and 6,126 in the year 2020.
Investigation on Communal Riots
Analyzing the data of communal riots from the year 2016 to 2021, there is a heavy decrease in the number of communal riots (clashes between two or more communities due to clashes of communal interests) in the state.
According to the NCRB Report, in the year 2016, there were 31 communal riots cases which went to 34 in the year 2017, but since then it came down to as low as 0 under the Yogi Government.
Cases of crime against women under Yogi Government
According to the data, at the time of SP government the crime against women was 1,56,634 (in the period 2013-2016) after which in the year 2017-2020, the criminal cases of women went to 2,24,694, which means that there has been a 43% increase in crimes against women during the Yogi government.
There has been a 17% decline in crime against women between 2019 and 2020, but UP still tops the list of crimes against women. After this West Bengal, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Assam come on the list.
Conclusion:
This is clear from the fact check that the claim of CM Yogi Adityanath, that no riots happened in UP in the last 6 years is misleading and far away from reality.
