Earthquake tremors were felt in many states of India including Delhi-NCR on Tuesday night. Due to the earthquake, panic spread among the people and people came out of the houses. Apart from Delhi-NCR, tremors were also felt in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Bihar and West Bengal.
Simultaneously, it is being claimed on social media that 3 people died in this earthquake in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir. By sharing a picture of a collapsed building, users are claiming that this photo is of the earthquake in Karnah, Kupwara, where 3 people have died.
Fact Check:
DFRAC team investigated further to know the truth about the death of 3 people due to earthquake in Kupwara. We received an official denial from Kupwara Police. Police has termed the death of 3 people as fake. According to them- “The news being spread on social media about the death of three people due to earthquake in Karnah, Kupwara is false. Please stop spreading fake news. DC and SSP Kupwara are already in Karnah in connection with the official visit.”
On the other hand, to know the truth of the viral picture, a reverse search revealed that this photo is of the earthquake in Turkey in February this year. The photo uploaded on the website of ‘Getty Images’ on February 6, 2023 states that – “A view of the destroyed building after the earthquake”. An earthquake shook the provinces of Kahramanmaras, Turkey on February 6, 2023. Relief and rescue work is going on in the areas. According to Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), a 7.4-magnitude earthquake occurred in Turkey’s southern province of Kahramanmaras. It was followed by a magnitude 6.4 earthquake that rocked the southeastern Gaziantep province. The third earthquake of magnitude 6.5 also occurred in Gaziantep.
At the same time, in the report published on 6 February 2023 of westobserver.com, this photo has been described as the earthquake in Turkey.

DFRAC’s fact check confirms that the claim that 3 people died in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara due to the earthquake is false. And the photo that is being shared is not of Kupwara but of Turkey.
