FactCheck: Did Police Resort To Lathi-Charge On The Students Protesting Over Hijab Ban In Bengal?

These days Hijab ban has become the most talked about topic on all the media platforms. Meanwhile, many pictures and videos linked to it are becoming viral. One such video is going massively viral on social media sites. In the video, police resort to lathicharge on some people protesting. Additionally, there are some women wearing hijab in the video.

People are claiming this video is of Murshidabad, Bengal where students who are protesting over HijabRow are beaten up brutally by the police. Further, sharing the video Tarique Anwar Champarni wrote, “This @MahuaMoitra [email protected] The video is from Murshidabad district of Bengal. Earlier girls were prevented from going to college in hijab and burqa. When the girls protested, the police behaved brutally. @MahuaMoitra there is a big difference between the speech given in the Parliament and the action taken by him.”

Similarly, many social media users shared this video on Facebook as well as on Twitter.



On google reverse image searching with the keyframes of the viral video, we found that this is an old video. Furthermore, we found the video on SahilOnline TV news. The channel uploaded this video on 15th September, 2021. Moreover, the caption of the video is, Bengaluru: Police resort to lathi-charge on students protesting against National Education Policy.”

Some people are sharing a clip of this video. Therefore, it is not related to the HijabRow protest. The students were protesting against National Education Policy.

Hence, in our FactCheck analysis, it is clear that the viral video is not related to the ongoing HijabRow Protest in any way. But, some people are sharing it to mislead people.
