On August 21, 2021 Union Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman launched the “Ubharte Sitare Fund” in Lucknow. The fund has been set up by Exim bank which will help facilitate the growth of micro, small and medium enterprises. During the event and the following tweets, Sitharaman claimed that Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of MSMEs in the country.
Fact-Check:
We were able to find data shared by the Union Minister of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Narayan Rane in the Lok Sabha on July 29 and discovered that Uttar Pradesh has a total of 12,78,072 MSMEs registered on the Udyog Aadhaar Portal.
By contrast, Maharashtra has 28.38 lakh MSMEs registered and Tamil Nadu has 15,40,859 MSMEs registered which makes Uttar Pradesh the third state in terms of most MSMEs registered.
Therefore, Nirmala Sitharaman’s claim is false.
