Viral claim of an Indian man harassing Canadian women is false

Fact Check en

A video of a man molesting women and recording them without their permission in Canada has been made viral on the internet. Users claim that the man is from India because of his brown-coloured skin and harassing Caucasian women.

A user on X posts this video with a caption that says, “How long before this creepy Indian guy films himself getting punched out for harassing Canadian women?” This raises racist comments on Indians and a generalisation of Indian men.

Fact-Check

After researching this issue, the claim is found to be false and misleading. The man in this video is Askar Razik. He is from Sri Lanka and lives in Canada. Several times, users online have pointed out that he makes videos of strangers without their consent. In fact, his videos mostly feature women, and he is accused of harassing them. In this recent video, he is again seen molesting women and recording them. His videos have sparked racism against Indians, as many confuse him with being an Indian. However, after going through his account on Instagram (@jacojaki2) and his channel on YouTube (Monkey Donkey Brain), we determined him to be a Sri Lankan. Many times, he has posted to spark criticism against Indians, and has also shared posts related to Sri Lanka. Thereafter, we found a video on his YouTube channel, posted on 16th August, where he mentions that he is a Sri Lankan.

Many users online have also mentioned that he is from Sri Lanka. For his videos igniting women’s safety in Canada, he has also made headlines on several media outlets, where it is mentioned that he is Sri Lankan.

Conclusion

Therefore, after considering all the evidence, the claim that him being an Indian is false and misleading. Whereas the truth is that he hails from Sri Lanka.
