Fact Check: Viral Video of PM Modi Offering Chadar Is From 2018, Not Recent

A viral video is circulating online showing Prime Minister Narendra Modi offering a chadar at a Muslim religious site, with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also present beside him.

Users sharing the video claim it to be a recent event. The video is captioned with provocative remarks, such as: “If this is true, I pray to God to give the orange bedbugs strength to bear this pain.” Additionally, text overlaid on the video reads: “May nature give blind devotees the strength to bear pain and sorrow. Is this also edited?”

The video has been widely shared on platforms like Facebook and YouTube Shorts.

Screenshot of a YouTube Shorts video posted by the channel @tawsifali786, titled 'kuch bolunga to bibad Hojayega' with hashtags #trendingshorts, #ytshort, and #youtubeshorts. The video has 3 views as of April 10, 2025. The video thumbnail features a religious or spiritual setting with several people standing around what appears to be a covered body, possibly indicating a funeral or a moment of silence. Hindi text is overlaid in the thumbnail, saying 'कुदरत अंधभक्तों को दुख और ग़म बर्दाश्त करने की शक्ति प्रदान करें....' (May nature give blind devotees the strength to endure sorrow and grief) and 'यह भी एडिट है क्या?' (Is this also edited?). The video duration is 1 minute and 59 seconds and is shown paused at the beginning. The visual content appears emotionally charged, possibly related to commentary or critique of blind faith or current religious issues in India.

Social media post shared by a page named 'I Support Rahul Gandhi' featuring a video still with bold Hindi text. The background shows a group of men dressed in traditional attire gathered around what appears to be a deceased body covered with a black cloth inside a religious or ceremonial setting. The upper part of the image contains Hindi text in orange, which reads: 'कुदरत अंधभक्तों को दुख और ग़म बर्दाश्त करने की शक्ति प्रदान करें….' (May nature give blind devotees the strength to endure sorrow and grief), accompanied by an emoji of people hugging. The bottom of the image in a bold orange banner says, 'यह भी एडिट है क्या?' (Is this also edited?). Below the video, the caption reads: 'अगर ये सच है तो मैं भगवान को प्रार्थना करता हु कि नासमझ कटमलों को ये दुख सहन की शक्ति दे 😥🥺😥🥺', translating to 'If this is true, I pray to God to give foolish fanatics the strength to bear this sorrow.' The image appears to be part of a critical commentary on religious extremism, viral content, or misinformation related to religious practices in India.

Fact Check

Upon investigation, the viral claim was found to be misleading.

A reverse image search revealed that the video in question was not recent. Multiple media outlets previously published the footage. Notably, a keyframe from the video matches visuals in a video uploaded by News Tak on June 28, 2018. The caption of that video reads: “Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Maghar in Uttar Pradesh on June 28 to mark the 500th death anniversary of the mystic poet and saint, Kabir Das.”

"Screenshot from a YouTube video uploaded by News Tak, titled 'मगहर गए प्रधानमंत्री मोदी, क्या है काशी स्वर्ग और मगहर नरक का किस्सा?' (Prime Minister Modi visits Maghar, what is the story of Kashi as heaven and Maghar as hell?). The video has over 7,800 views and was published on June 28, 2018. The scene shows Indian Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath dressed in saffron robes, standing with folded hands inside a white-arched spiritual or historical monument, accompanied by security personnel and local attendees. The Hindi headline overlaid on the video frame reads: 'कबीर ने आखिरी वक्त मगहर में बिताया' (Kabir spent his final moments in Maghar). The logo of News Tak is visible in the top right corner. This image relates to a documentary-style news segment discussing the legacy of 15th-century poet-saint Kabir, his association with the town of Maghar in Uttar Pradesh, and the spiritual significance of his last days spent there.

Further verification from an official Press Information Bureau (PIB) release dated June 29, 2018, confirms the event. It states:
“The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi visited Maghar in Sant Kabir Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh today and paid homage to the great saint and poet, Kabir, on the occasion of his 500th death anniversary. He offered floral tributes at Saint Kabir’s Samadhi and offered a chadar at the Saint’s mazaar. The Prime Minister also visited the Saint Kabir Cave and unveiled a plaque to mark the laying of the foundation stone for the Saint Kabir Academy, which will promote the saint’s teachings and philosophy.”

Additionally, similar reports were published by the Times of India, the official PM India website, and other credible sources, all dated June 28, 2018.

Conclusion

From the fact-check, it is evident that the viral video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi offering a chadar at a Muslim religious site is not recent, but dates back to 2018. The video is from his visit to Maghar, Uttar Pradesh, to commemorate the 500th death anniversary of the saint and poet Kabir Das.

Hence, the viral claim being circulated on social media is misleading.
