Viral Claim of Chabahar Deal Cancellation Between India and Iran Is Fake

A claim has gone viral on social media, particularly shared by Pakistani users on X , suggesting that Iran is planning to abandon the Chabahar Port agreement with India. This has sparked discussions and concerns about the future of the strategic port, which plays a critical role in India’s access to Central Asia.

A user named Asad Nasir shared,”Iran is likely to cancel the Chabahar Port agreement with India.”

Fact Check

After investigating the viral claim, we found that it is false and baseless. There is no official statement or report from either the Iranian government or India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to support the notion that Iran is canceling the Chabahar Port agreement with India.

We verified this by checking the official social media accounts and announcements from the Indian Embassy in Iran and the MEA, both of which provided no indication that the agreement is in jeopardy. Furthermore, no credible media outlets have reported on any issues related to the cancellation of the Chabahar deal.

In fact, recent media reports state that India and Iran have solidified their commitment to the Chabahar project. India signed a 10-year contract with Iran to further develop and operate the strategic port. The Chabahar Port, located on Iran’s southeastern coast along the Gulf of Oman, is critical for India’s regional trade ambitions, providing access to Afghanistan, Iran, and Central Asia, bypassing Pakistan’s Karachi and Gwadar ports.

Conclusion

The viral claim about the cancellation of the Chabahar Port agreement between India and Iran is fake and entirely fabricated. No official sources or credible news reports substantiate this claim. The Chabahar project remains intact and is a key element in India’s strategic trade framework.

DFRAC Analysis: Fake.
