Did Kashmir witness protests against the banning of Eid prayers at Srinagar's Jamia Masjid?

The festival of Eid 2024 has been celebrated across the country while a claim has recently surfaced on X(Twitter) stating that Indian authorities barred Eid prayers at Jamia Masjid, sparking protests. Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was placed under house arrest. Police used force against protesters, escalating tensions in the region.”

Taking to X(Twitter), an account named Psywar Bureau has shared an image and asserted this claim.

Additionally, another user named Preety also shared the same image and made a similar claim.

Fact-Check

The DFRAC team conducted a keyword search on Google regarding the above claim and found that no such news has been published citing protests against the banning of Eid prayers at Srinagar’s Jamia Masjid in Jammu and Kashmir. Moreover, the image attached with the claim originally dates back to 2019.

We found this image on Yandex linked with an article by the Newspaper website The Hindu On the contrary, media reports in the form of Photo galleries from Media outlets such as ABP Live and Outlook India depicted pictures of Eid-ul-Fitr 2024 that were joyfully celebrated in Jammu & Kashmir.

Conclusion

DFRAC ‘s Fact-Check proves that the claim stating protests sparked against the banning of Eid prayers at Srinagar’s Jamia Masjid is misleading as no media reports have been found reporting such kind of news. Instead of this, Kashmir witnessed zealous and joyful celebrations of Eid ul Fitr 2024
