Fact Check
To know the truth of the viral video, the DFRAC team converted the video into some keyframes and reverse-searched it. During this, we found that the video is not recent one, but from September 2023. According to media reports, on the complaint of Sri Ram Sena in Doddabalapur, Karnataka, the police detained 22 people on the charges of carrying beef from Hindupur in Andhra Pradesh to Bengaluru.
According to Hindustan Times report, Members of Sri Ram Sena intercepted vehicles engaged in illegal transportation of beef in Doddaballapur, setting one vehicle ablaze. Police have detained 22 people and recovered 18 tonnes of beef worth over ₹26 lakhs. Sri Ram Sena activists were booked under section 153 A and the beef transporters under the Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughtering and Preservation Act.
What does the law say about cow slaughter in Karnataka?
The existing ban on cow slaughter was extended to include cows, bulls, buffaloes, and calves under the Karnataka Animal Protection and Prevention of Slaughter Act, 2020. Here, contrary to the 1964 Act, ban was imposed on the slaughter of cows, bulls, calves, and buffaloes whose age is less than 13 years.
It may be noted that according to Article 48 of the constitution, cow slaughter is banned in many other states including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. Arunachal Pradesh, Kerala, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Lakshwadeep are the only states where there is no law regarding cow slaughter.
Conclusion
Therefore, it is clear from the DFRAC’s fact-check that the viral video is not the recent one but from September 2023. According to media reports, beef was bought to Karnataka in trucks from Andhra Pradesh, after which police arrested the accused. Hence, the claim made by users is misleading.
