Fact Check:

To fact-check the viral claim, we did a simple search on Google. We got coverage from several media houses regarding this incident. Nowhere in these media coverage is there any mention of water being released into the river. Apart from this, it has been told in almost all the media that suddenly the water of the river had increased, due to which this accident happened.

According to the news of Dainik Jagran– “A heart-wrenching accident occurred during the immersion of Durga idol on Vijayadashami day (October 5) in Mal river located in Malbazar of Jalpaiguri district. Due to the sudden rise in the water level of Mal river here, many people got washed away in the river. So far 8 people have been reported dead in this accident. 50 are still reported missing. 14 injured have been admitted to Mal Bazar Hospital. So far 70 people have been rescued in the rescue operation. The rescue operation is still on.”

Apart from this, according to the news, the officials had already warned the people about the rise in water level by announcing to Mike. At the same time, according to ABP News, there was a sudden flood, due to which this accident happened.

In the fact check of DFRAC, no information has come out about the release of water in the river during Durga idol immersion. Hence the claim being made by social media users is false.
