Fact Check: Did Thailand Refuse to Buy BrahMos Missiles After Operation Sindoor?

Fact Check en

Pakistan-based accounts have shared the claim stating that Thailand has refused the deal to buy BrahMos missiles from India after Operation Sindoor. An account named Faizan Riaz shared the claim, stating,
“After the Phalgam clashes, the Indian media tried to spin a BrahMos deal with Thailand. But HUMINT confirms Bangkok neither plans to buy nor has its military even proposed such a purchase, pure Indian propaganda for global optics.”

Multiple other users have also shared the claim, which can be viewed here and here.

Fact Check

Upon investigation, we found the claim to be misleading. A 2019 report from Saigon News (a Thailand-based portal) noted that Thailand was in negotiations with India over a potential purchase of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles.

A 2023 report in the EurAsian Times highlighted that Thailand showed “keen interest” in the Indo-Russian system, with discussions gaining momentum after the Royal Thai Navy Chief visited India in December 2018.

While interest and negotiations have been reported, there is no credible media report or official confirmation from the Thai government that Thailand has refused or declined the BrahMos missile deal.

Conclusion

Thus, from the fact check, it is evident that Thailand has shown interest and engaged in discussions with India regarding BrahMos missiles. Still, no official confirmation exists of either a finalized deal or a refusal. The claim that Thailand rejected the deal after Operation Sindoor is misleading.
