A user on X, with the username ‘MeghUpdates,’ posted a video with a claim on the internet. The user claimed “TSUNAMI WARNINGS Eastern, Russia, Japan, Hawaii, and Alaska’s Aleutian Islands. Japan & Hawaii issue evacuation orders for some coastal regions. Tsunami waves hit parts of Eastern Russia’s Kuril Islands after the 8.7 earthquake.” The user posted the video on 30 July 2025.
Another user with the account ‘AstroCounselKK’ posted the same video with a similar caption.
Fact Check
The team of DFRAC investigated the viral claim and the video on Google and found that the claim is true. But the video attached to it is misleading. After searching the Google images with the key frames of the concerned video we discovered a similar video posted on YouTube. A channel named ‘SagaingEarthquakeArchive2025’ uploaded the video with the caption “M 7.7 – 7.9 earthquake reaches MMI X and destroys store in Tada – U, Myanmar.”
We also discovered that the same video has been uploaded on X also by an account ‘RT_com’ on 29 March 2025. The video was uploaded with the caption, “quick thinking, saves the life of that woman as the 7.7M quakes in Myanmar destroy her store. She goes under the table, falling shelves around her wake up. One thousand, six hundred and forty-four dead, three thousand and four hundred injured”.
The keywords from the viral claim were then searched on the internet. We came across an article by ‘The Hindu’ published on 30 July 2025. The title is “Tsunami LIVE updates: first waves have struck Hawaii as a huge earthquake off Russia triggers evacuation.”
A BBC report says, Myanmar was reeling following the huge earthquake which hit the country on Friday, 28 March. The 7.7 magnitude tremor was felt elsewhere, including in Thailand and south-west China. More than 3,000 people have died and more than 4,500 have been injured, say the leaders of Myanmar’s military government.
Conclusion
Hence, we can say that the viral claim is justified however the video with which it is being tagged is misleading. The viral clip which caught everyone’s attention is of an incident in Myanmar where an earthquake measuring 7.7 and over hit Myanmar in late March of this year.
