Fact Check: Video of a child sitting on his grandfather’s corpse is not related to the terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir

Siddharth Urmil April 23, 2025
Video of a child sitting on his grandfather’s corpse is not related to the terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir

Claim

A terrorist attack took place in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22. According to media reports, more than 25 people died in the attack. Following the incident, people expressed their anger by sharing posts on social media. A video is going viral on social media claiming to be related to this incident.

In the viral video, a small child can be seen sitting on a dead body. Many users on social media have shared this video and are claiming that the child is Hindu and was visiting Pahalgam with his family, where terrorist shot and killed his grandfather.

This video is shared by Dr. Anita Vladivoski on X (formerly Twitter). Vladivoski shared this video with a caption in Hindi which say, जंगली इस्लामी कॉम के आतंकवादियों ने इसकी दादी को इसके सामने गोलियों से भुन दिया, तांकि पूरी उम्र ये बच्चा देहशत् मे जिये पहलगाम, कश्मीर, a rough translation of this in English say, “The terrorists of the feral Islamic community killed his grandmother with bullets in front of him, so that he would live in terror for the rest of his life. Pahalgam, Kashmir.”

Meanwhile, several other users are sharing this video with the same claim, which can be seen by clicking here, here, here, and here.

Fact Check

To investigate the viral video, the DFRAC conducted a reverse image search of the keyframes from the video. This led our team to multiple media reports dated July 1, 2020, showing the same child sitting on his grandfather’s corpse. Many media outlets including Aaj Tak, Fast Khabar, National Herald, and Al Jazeera.

According to media reports, the terrorist attack took place in Sopore, Jammu and Kashmir, not Pahalgam. In that attack, a security personnel member was martyred and three others were injured. A civilian was also killed. The heartbreaking image of the innocent child sitting on his grandfather’s body moved many to tears.

According to news reports, the deceased man was identified as Bashir Ahmad Khan, who was 65 years old. In Al Jazeera’s report, a statement from Bashir’s brother, Nazir Ahmad, was published in which he raised questions about his brother’s death.

Conclusion

Hence, it is clear from the fact check by DFRAC that the viral video is not related to the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. This video is from July 2020, when a 65-year-old man named Bashir Ahmad Khan was killed in a terror attack. And not an old woman. Therefore, the claim made on social media is misleading.
