Fact Check: Old video spreading as action by Uttar Pradesh Police on miscreants is misleading

Siddharth Urmil February 25, 2025
Fact-check by DFRAC debunking a misleading claim about a viral video falsely attributed to Uttar Pradesh Police action against miscreants. The image highlights a social media post with a 'MISLEADING' label, clarifying that the video is old and unrelated.

Claim

A video is going viral where we can see some miscreants wreaking havoc on local shops and stalls. Later, they are chased and beaten by Uttar Pradesh police.

Screenshot of a viral video falsely claiming Uttar Pradesh Police action against 'jihadis.' The tweet, posted by K P Tripathi, praises Yogi Adityanath's administration. The video shows a street scene with people walking near parked scooters and shops. Fact-checkers suggest the video is old and misleading.

The user has claimed that Yogi Ji’s police have dealt with ‘Jihadis’ very effectively.

Fact Check

To verify the claims about the viral video, DFRAC investigated by doing a reverse image search of a keyframe of the video. This search led us to a news report by Indian Express, dated 30 December 2022. The news report stated that Ajit Pawar demanded a special team to tackle ‘Kotya Gang’ who brandished machetes and assaulted people in the Manjari Budruk, Bhekrainagar, Ganga Nagar and Hadapsar areas.

News article from Express News Service reporting on 'Koyta gang' violence in Pune. The article highlights machete-wielding gang members terrorizing the public in Manjari Budruk, Bhekrainagar, Ganga Nagar, and Hadapsar. A related image shows a street scene at night. Fact-checkers have linked this report to viral claims about recent police action.

According to the Uttar Pradesh Police, two youngsters who were allegedly involved in the incident were soon taken to the police station. While Karan Dalvi was arrested, the other was a minor whom the police apprehended. A case has been registered under sections pertaining to the Arms Act, besides other sections involving assault on citizens.

This incident is from outskirts of Pune, Maharashtra and not from Uttar Pradesh, as mentioned in the user’s post, about Yogi Ji’s police (Yogi Adityanath is the CM of Uttar Pradesh).

Conclusion

The fact check by DFRAC revealed that this incident has not occurred recently in Uttar Pradesh, but is an old incident from 2022, from Maharashtra’s Pune.
