The war between Russia and Ukraine has been going on for the last three years. While Ukraine is being supported by the West and America, Russia also has the support of communist forces.
Amid this, on social media, news of the Ukraine-Russia conflict has gone viral. While sharing the news, users wrote, “BREAKING: ABC News ADMITS that nearly 1 MILLION Ukrainian soldiers have DIED thus far.”
Fact Check
During the investigation, DFRAC found the claim to be false. We did not find any such news from ABC News.
Moreover, we found a report from the New York Post published on September 17, 2024, stating, “Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine has reached a grim milestone — with the number of Ukrainians and Russians killed or wounded in the two-and-a-half-year war nearing one million.”
Furthermore, we found an updated version of the report from the BBC, published on December 9, 2024, stating, “Some 43,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed since Russia’s full-scale invasion began,” as said by Volodymyr Zelensky in a rare admission of the extent of the nation’s casualties.
Conclusion
It is evident from DFRAC’s fact check that the claim of “1 MILLION Ukrainian soldiers have died” is false, as no such admission has been made by ABC News or any credible news source. With recent reports indicating around 43,000 casualties as of December 2024.
